Dublin Gig Guide: 12th – 18th February 2018

Dublin Gig Guide: 12th – 18th February 2018

It’s the month of Love and Valentines day is nearly upon us! Whether you’re spoken for our are a Bachelor/Bachelorette there’s loads of great gigs on this week to celebrate your love (or being single!)

Starting off with Paul Weller at the Olympia Theatre! 2017 marked the 40th anniversary of Paul Weller’s first album, “In The City”, which he released with The Jam in May 1977. For most artists such a landmark would be greeted with extensive retrospective celebrations: lavish reissues and all that jazz. But Paul Weller is not like most artists, instead releasing a new studio album, because releasing new albums is what Paul Weller does. Always moving forwards, almost clinically averse to nostalgia or checking his progress in the rear-view mirror! He plays the first of three nights on Monday! Tuesday & Wednesday gigs are SOLD OUT so be sure to snap up any remaining tickets!

Also on Monday night, Seattle native Brian Fennell, better known as SYML will be performing at Whelans. Some may know his as the founding member of the band Barcelona! Translated as “simple” in Welsh, SYML is all about getting a keen grasp on textural and emotive songwriting, Fennell combines bare piano, minimalist synth and string-scapes with ethereal vocals to take the listener on a journey through the senses.

Tuesday night, The Front Bottoms will be performing at Vicar Street. They released a new video for their track  ‘Vacation Town’ which was the standout track on their October 2017 album “Going Grey” released by Fueled By Ramen Records! As part of a European Tour they have announced two Irish dates for February 2018!

Valentines Day there is loads on for all you lovers/haters! 90’s Alt-Rock band Alien Ant Farm will be returning to Dublin with very special guests Soil and openers Local H. AAF hit the big time with their sensational cover of Michael Jackson’s Smooth Criminal in the early noughties and have featured on everyone’s mix CD at some stage! Rein in a bit of nostalgia this Valentines Day as some tickets are still available! You can also catch the Booka Brass with Jess Kav & BARQ as they take on Dublin’s newest hotspot,  Tramline for your alternative Valentine’s soulful special! Doors from 8:00PM with bands from 8:30PM followed by club DJ until late!

Thursday night the fantasitc Jake Bugg will play a completely sold out gig at Whelan’s! Following the release of his stunning new album ‘Hearts That Strain’, he will perform an acoustic show Thursday, 15th February. Tickets didn’t hang around long for this one! Meanwhile over in The Grand Social we have SELK who are playing their first Dublin headline show in almost two years! Alongside Anna Jordan leading a bigger six piece band as well as support  support from the wonderful Liam Ó Maonlaí, it promises to be an exciting night of music! Finally on Thursday we have Wild Beasts! Playing, most likely one of their last gigs after announcing their spilt, Domino is nonetheless proud to announce the release of the ‘Punk Drunk And Trembling’ EP. An uncovered gem from the band’s Boy King recording sessions, its eponymous lead track is available digitally now!

Kicking off the weekend we have Sorcha Richardson playing at The Grand Social! Richardson is a singer/songwriter from Dublin currently based in Brooklyn, New York. Since releasing an EP of bedroom-made demos in college, she has been honing her style of alternative-pop music on singles such as Petrol Station, Lost, Ruin Your Night and Waking Life, receiving praise from the likes of Zane Lowe, BBC Radio 1’s Phil Taggart and The FADER. She has performed at CMJ and Northside Festival and played to sold-out crowds at some of New York’s best venues, including Brooklyn’s Rough Trade, opening for Jens Lekman. After returning to Ireland for Christmas holidays she found herself with a number of gigs lined up so has decided to stay for the foreseeable future. Tickets €12/€10 w/student card! The other end of the specturm, Techno wizard Max Cooper brings his fully immersive live A/V show to Dublin’s District 8! His first appearance at District 8, he is known as an amazing live performer who’s visual shows are nothing short of stunning. Support on the night from Bad Bones, an immensely talented artist who’s been making a name herself!

Finally for Saturday night, we have trio Dense & Pika and Hybrasil! Dense & Pika are a British electronic production/artist/DJ duo compromising of producer/DJs Alex Jones (Hypercolour label boss) and Chris Spero better known to many by his Glimpse alias. Irish native Will Kinsella better know as Hybrasil has also been extremely busy with a series of live shops on the legendary Space terrace last summer, alongside acts such as techno-midwife Juan Atkins, Paul Ritch & Marc Houle, as well as live performances with Sven Vath on his world tour and at Jeff Mill’s sold-out Orchestra show in Dublin’s Bord Gais Theatre! The trio perform at District 8 on Saturday night!
