Dublin Gig Guide 13th – 16th February 2017
Hello and welcome back to our weekly Dublin Gig Guide brought to you by Sound Training! All the weeks best gigs from all around the city! First off kicking us off on Valentines Day is Australian singer-songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Carla dal Forno playing in the intimate setting of the Grand Social. Her album debut album “You Know What It’s Like” has been described as “ Smokey and ominous” as well as inhibiting the gloom into her tracks”. Minimal in nature, it should make sure an interesting gig! Next up on Wednesday evening, we have American favourites Band Of Horses. Vicar Street is the host for this one, the group released their 5th studio album titled “Why Are You OK?” last June. Most people would be familiar with the bands first album, in particular the single “ The Funeral” which has been used on countless TV shows, films, and ads. A great live band we sure to make it down to Vicar Street if you can.
Busy night of gigs again on Thursday evening, where you can catch old favourite Gilbert O’ Sullivan playing all his catchy tunes in the Bord Gais Theratre at 7PM. The Irish-born English-raised O’Sullivan has has massive hits over the years including “What’s In A Kiss?” and “Matrimony” not one to miss if you’re are of the older generation. While over in the Sugar club across town, we have a show for the newer generation. Una Healy who rose to fame with the pop girl band “The Saturdays” is performing a set of solo material in promotion of her debut solo album “The Waiting Game”. Possibly a last minute Valentine’s Day present for the missus fella’s? 😉 Tickets are €23.65 including service charge!
Friday night we have a really exciting show taking place in Vicar Street, Dublin noise-rockers Girl Band are putting on a fantastic night of music. Proceeds on the night will go towards Pieta House, a non-profit suicide and self-harm crisis centre. Support on the comes in the form of Rusangano Family, Lynched, and dj sets from James Vincent McMorrow, Geoff Travis (founder of Rough Trade) and Aisling O’Riordan. Tickets are still availble at €33.75 including booking fee, be sure to pick one up for this fantastic cause and I will see you there on the night!
Saturday night downstairs in the Academy on Middle Abbey St. We have American pop-punkers Four Year Strong will be playing a show so be sure to wear your skinny jeans and get your black nail polish out for this one! A completly different night of music is taking place over in the Pavilion Theatre in Dún Laóghaire as Josh Ritter is bringing his brand of alternative folk-rock to Dublin, be sure to catch him if you’re keeping it local.
Finally ending out the week we have a huge headline show in the 3 Arena. His first of two shows here, Drake has become a household name over the past few years from album releases, to be rumoured to be dating Rihanna and now to be confirmed to be dating Jenifer Lopez, he will be putting on a great show of old and new music. His most recent album did very well in the charts and it seems that there’s no stopping him!
Last but not least, we have out GIG OF THE WEEK, and this week there can only really be one winner…. it has to be GIRL BAND at Vicar Street. Not so much gig of the week but night of the week, because the night is for Pieta House and with some great musical acts on offer be sure to make it down and support Irish music and Pieta House! Having seen Girl Band here the last time they played I can honestly say they’re one of the finest live acts I’ve ever seen.
