Dublin Gig Guide 16th - 22nd January
We’re back with our weekly instalment of the Dublin Gig Guide brought to you by Sound Training Online! Fairly busy week for gigs around the city, and we have all the info you’ll need to plan the week accordingly!
First off we have Kentucky rockers Cage The Elephant performing in The Academy on Monday night, followed by singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright playing Vicar Street the following night. Two different styles of music but both should draw big crowds and both gigs will be great! Wednesday night is one for fans of the heavier style of music, described as "Extreme metal", Meshuggah take the stage at Vicar Street. This gig is not one for the faint hearted expect thundering double and triple kick drums, super low and heavy detuned guitars and growling vocals, but you can also expect an amazing live performance so if you’re open to experiencing a gig of a lifetime tickets are currently still available at €27.50 plus booking fee!
Easing us into the weekend we have two gigs worth a look, first off it’s Irish singer-songwriter Wallis Bird again in Vicar Street. After releasing her 2016 album “Change” Wallis has taken on a new style of songwriting, and you can tell from her new album there has been much more production put behind it, more electronic as opposed to voice and acoustic guitar which brought her to the forefront of Irish music but at the heart of it she still writes fantastic songs this show is the beginning of a huge European tour be sure to catch her if you can! Down the road from Vicar Street, in the Workman’s Club American emo-rockers The Hotelier will be playing a once off show and not one to miss if that’s your type of thing!
Friday night we have classic rockers Black Sabbath playing a monumental gig in the 3Arena. With a few shows left in the UK, Black Sabbath play Dublin as part of their final ever tour aptly named “The End – The Final Tour”. The classic rockers have an amazing career that has spanned over 40 years so this show is definitely not one to miss! Also on Friday Irish rockers Bell X1 will be playing the first of two nights in the Olympia Theatre unfortunately both gigs are sold out!
Saturday plays host to New Orleans pianist Jon Cleary. Cleary has made a name for himself over the last few years as a fantastic live performer and this show in Whelan’s should be no different, also on Saturday night, Ian Shaw will be performing alongside The Phil Ware Trio in The Workman’s Club, expect a night of cool jazzy numbers, tickets are €15 and doors for this one are 8PM. Closing out the week we have Margo Price playing some chilled out country tunes to ease those Sunday blues, you can catch her in the Button Factory at 7.30PM.
But our GIG OF THE WEEK this week has got to be BLACK SABBATH in the 3Arena. Ozzy and co. are on their final leg of an absolutely spectacular career and are playing one final show in Dublin as part of it. With a career spanning over 40 years and with 20 studio albums under their belt Black Sabbath can retire knowing that they have been a massive part of influencing so many bands out their today. FAREWELL SABBATH!
