Dublin Gig Guide : 16th – 22nd October 2017
We have a jam packed week this week for you! An eclectic mix of gigs all around the city so you’ve no excuse not to get out and catch something! Let’s kick off as always with Monday night and we have The Breeders performing at Vicar Street! Pixies former bass player Kim Deal, started up The Breeders with Tanya Donnelly of Throwing Muses. alternative grunge rock is the order of the day here and doors for this one are at 8PM!
Tuesday evening, The Sugar Club plays host to FORQ! FORQ advertise themselves as instrumental quartet with an aggressive sound and a penchant for sonic exploration. The band recently released their latest album Thrēq in August to critical acclaim! Their current line-up consists of Chris Mc Queen (Snarky Puppy), keyboardist Henry Hey (Rudder), drummer Jason “JT” Thomas (Snarky Puppy, RH Factor) and bassist Kevin Scott (Wayne Krantz). So be sure to make it down for this star-studded gig!
Elsewhere, The Jesus & Mary Chain will be making their return to Vicar Street! The alternative shoegazers will be playing as part of their most recent album “Damage & Joy” which was released in early 2017 and was their first album in 19 years! Tickets still available at €40 a pop! Finally for Tuesday, English alt-rock band The Horrors will be playing at the Tivoli Theatre! They will be supported on the night by The Fontaines, whose drummer Tom, teaches with us here at the Sound Training Music Academy! So be sure to get down and support them! It should be a great night of music around the city!
Wednesday night, J. Cole brings his “4 your eyez only” tour to the 3 Arena! Performing as part of a 57-city tour including North America, Europe, New Zealand & Australia! Touring in support of his fourth album which is Platinum certified and debuted at #1 in the Billboard top 200 last December! While across town in Whelan’s we have Badly Drawn Boy! After a number of sold out gigs last year as well as a headline slot at Sea Sessions and The Galway Arts Festival, Badly Drawn Boy returns to Ireland and as he says himself it’s one of his favourite places to perform! He’s on-stage from 8pm!
Thursday night, Tycho performs a sold out show at District 8 hosted by Hidden Agenda! He plays alongside a full band for his first headline show since the last time Hidden Agenda hosted him back in 2014! His most recent album Epoch was released in September 2016 to positive reviews and was even nominated for a Grammy! Tickets are sold out for this!
Kicking off the weekend, we have St. Vincent playing at the Olympia Theatre on Friday. As part of the “Fear The Future Tour” the Grammy award winning St. Vincent has had a mammoth year, the “bona fide guitar god & pop visionary” made her directorial debut in February when ‘The Birthday Party’ from the ‘XX’ horror anthology premiered at the Sundance Film Festival (she also wrote and scored the piece). More recently, she was named ambassador for Record Store Day 2017, recorded a 7” single with John Legend to benefit Planned Parenthood, and unveiled updates to her signature collection of Ernie Ball guitars! In Whelan’s we have The Young Folk! The Dublin five piece have been touring parts of Ireland, Scandinavia and North America over the past 9 months whiles performing at some of Ireland’s well known festival such as Electric Picnic, Sea Sessions, Valentia Isle Festival and The Spirit of Folk Festival. These guys are ones to keep your eye on for the future!
Saturday night, we have Ailbhe Reddy playing Whelan’s to finish off the Irish leg of her tour! Since the independent release of Reddy’s hugely successful debut EP ‘Hollowed Out Sea’ in 2016, she has received excellent reviews and extensive radio play in Ireland, the UK and Germany. It has also been streamed over 2 MILLION times on Spotify.
Over in the Button Factory we have The Slow Readers Club! The Slow Readers Club are a Mancunian four piece who specialise in guitar-electro pop. In 2016 the band drew huge crowds at summer festival appearances including Tramlines, Kendal Calling, Victorious Festival (2 stages) Ramsbottom Festival and Castlepalooza Festival. In November 2106 they played 3 SOLD OUT headline shows at o2 Ritz Manchester, Whelans Dublin and Oslo Hackney. And finally, closing out the weekend we have Chris Wood performing at Whelan’s. A self-taught musician, composer and song writer, Chris is a lifelong autodidact whose independent streak shines through everything he does. Always direct and unafraid to speak his mind, his song writing has been praised for its surgical clarity!
