Dublin Gig Guide - 17th -23rd April
We're back again with our weekly instalment of the Dublin Gig Guide! All the best headline shows from around the city all in one place! After the mania that was Ed Sheeran in the 3 Arena, this week is substantially quieter for big name acts, but none the less we have a number of fantastic shows throughout the week for you to sink your teeth into!
Kicking us off on Monday we have Mutefish, an amalgamation of musicians from Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Lithuania and Ukraine. They categorise themselves as Progressive/Techno/Folk, so make of that what you will but if you're looking for a fantastic gig full of energy and craziness then this is the show for you. They play Whelan's at 9pm! On Tuesday night we have a less intense but similarly talented musician by the name of Joey Dosik, who has worked with a number of high profile artists including Vulpeck, Miguel Atwood Ferguson and Mocky among others! A multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and singer, Dosik is an incredibly talented musician and if you're a fan of any of the artists listed above or are just in the mood to see some quality, then get yourself down to the Sugar Club on Tuesday evening.
Wednesday night Vicar Street plays host to Al Stewart for a night hits ranging all the way back to his bedsit with "Bedsitter Images". Being accompanied by his long-time collaborator Dave Nachmanoff and also joined by Guitarist Tim Renwick on the night! Thursday night we have a double header of brilliant Irish talent. First off in the Sugar Club we have Aine Cahill. Aine has made a name for her on the Irish music scene, originally hailing from County Cavan she has a voice that sounds like the perfect mix of Adele and Amy Winehouse and with a tour around the UK and Ireland, things are looking bright for Ms. Cahill. Over in Whelan's, we have Chasing Felix who are another top-notch band coming out of the Dublin music scene. Describing themselves as Electronic Rock/Indietronic, they really bring a new style that mixes many elements together, and they also put on a great energetic live show.
Friday night we have German superstar Dj and producer Sven Vath gracing the stage out in The Wright Venue. Most people who listen to any style of electronic music will know the name Sven Vath. Along with Richie Hawtin and possibly a few others this guy has been around the scene for over 30 years. His company Cocoon consists of a booking agency, record label and they do a bunch of events all over Europe, tickets are selling quick so if you want to see one of the Godfathers of electronic music get them quick! Back over in town, in the best Jazz Club around, the one and only J.J Smyth's we have the Phil Ware Trio. The trio is Ireland's leading piano trio and have been performing around Dublin for years, and off the back of a recent gig alongside Ian Shaw, they have landed a slot at the prestigious Dublin Jazz club. €10 in and cool vibes all night!
Saturday night we have Kasabian performing their first Irish date for a few years in the Olympia Theatre! They included Dublin in the tour and tickets were snapped up very quick! Be sure to hear all the big hits "Shoot The Runner", "Clubfoot" and many more. Doors for this one are at 7PM! Finally, closing out the week we have blues/country superstar Frankie Ballard who will be playing in Whelan's. His hit single "Young & Crazy" has over 4 million views on YouTube so you can be sure it will be packed out! Doors at 8PM!
That's it for this week folks! We just have one more thing. . .the GIG OF THE WEEK! This week it's hard to see past SVEN VATH at The Wright Venue! As mentioned previously Vath is the Godfather of EDM and a pioneer or electronic music around the globe, if it hadn't been for him and a few others who kept the parties going and kept the music playing who know's what state of live electronic dance music would be in nowadays.
