So as the winter begins to raise its cold ugly head once again our warm summer evenings are quickly becoming a distant memory, don’t be disheartened as we still have one final festival to get through which is taking place this coming weekend! Yes, Canalaphonic returns for it’s third year and has a whole host of great events for all the family to attend! That’s not the only decent thing on this week so let’s get going!
Monday night, The National play Vicar Street for their second performance in Dublin for the “Sleep Well Beast” tour. With tickets for all their Irish shows selling out in no time at all its unfortunate as many fans, including myself were left disappointed. What is going to be a great show, doors from 8PM! The Sugar Club has Ethiopian musician best known as the father or Ethio-Jazz, Mulatu Astatke performing as part of the Beck’s Rhythm Series! Focusing on instrumental music, Astatke has trained in London, New York and Boston where he combined jazz and Latin music combined with traditional Ethiopian music. He was the first African to be enrolled in Berklee College Of Music Where he received an Honorary degree in 2012! Doors 8PM for this one!
Tuesday night, Australia’s contemporary folk group The Mar Trio will be performing at the upstairs venue in Whelan’s. With a number of awards under their belt already in their career, 2 parts of the trio had left university degrees unfinished to embark on a tour that would last two years touring around America, Canada, Australia & Europe performing at folk festivals along the way. €12 on the door!
Wednesday night we have a gig that was rescheduled from last December due to sickness. Red Hot Chili Peppers will play the 3 Arena! The first of two nights a the 3 Arena, the Chili’s have always been an Irish favourite with their catchy blend of funky rock and energetic performances and this should be no different as they missed the original dates due to illness! No doubt they will make it up to the fans! Both nights are SOLD OUT!
Kicking off Thursday evening first off we have Siv Jakobsen who will be playing at Whelan’s. Described as “beautifully atmospheric” she has been compared to Laura Marling and Ane Brun. Her album “The Nordic Mellow” has taken the world by storm recieveing 5-star reviews. Support on the night from Allman Brown! Over in The Sugar Club, Irish singer-songwriter Ciara Sidine is launching her new album “Unbroken Line”. Sidine’s sound has been described as an “Americana with an unmistakably Celtic feel to it’s poetic lyrics and confident vocal”. Unbroken Line, follows the success of her debut album Shadow Road Shining which was received very well by critics.
Starting off the weekend Friday 22nd is Culture Night so there is actually too much to cover! There is tonnes of events, workshops, gigs, on around the city so be sure to have a look and see what tickles your fancy! One of the highlights is Wild Youth who will be gracing the stage of The Grand Social. The young 4-piece have been making quite a name for themselves over the past year and just released a music video for their second single Lose Control which you can check out here! On Saturday night we have Ennio Morricone playing the 3 Arena! The legendary Italian film composer will perform a farewell concert, as part of a European tour that has sold over 500,00 tickets! Composing over 500 scores for cinema and television & over 100 absolute musical works Morricone really is one of a kind and, as you can imagine this gig is fully sold out! Finally, closing out the weekend we have Anathema performing at The Academy! The Liverpudlian rock band will play The Academy as part of a UK & Ireland tour. Their most recent album, The Optimist has been well received by critics so be sure to hear a mixture of the old classics and new works!
