The weekend is upon once again AND it’s a bank holiday so why not celebrate extended periods off work with our weekly installment of the Dublin Gig Guide! Lots happening over the next week so let’s get straight into it!
We’ll kick off on Monday night with While She Sleeps performing in The Academy. The British Metalcore act have recently released their third full-length album earlier this month and are embarking on a month long tour of the UK and Ireland. If Metal is your thing be sure to make it down, similar to the likes of Bring Me The Horizon and Architects, who funnily enough are both British! In Whelan’s, we’ve got two tickets to Iron Maiden baby! Wheatus, yes I repeat WHEATUS are performing! The New York rock band have been struggling the past few years and said the only way they can afford to keep going is by selling previous years recording gear. Frontman Brendan Brown says “It’s an interesting paradox that people won’t buy music but they still buy the stuff to make it and that we can carry on that way…together, we found a way forward.” Which when you think about raises an interesting question in itself. Anyway, tickets for the gig are a measly €18!
Tuesday night we have Christian-post hardcore band UnderOath play The Academy! The band have been through a number of line-up changes and alterations and took a hiatus between 2013 and 2015. No sign of a new album as of yet, but possibly could be writing it on this current tour. Support on the night is from regulars mewithoutYou and doors are from 7PM! Also on Tuesday night over in Vicar Street, we have Soul music legend Booker T. Jones. It could be argued that the Rock ‘n’ Roll hall of fame inductee is largely responsible for rise and never-ending popularity through the past four decades, and now he brings his live show to our little island. Vicar Street is the perfect setting for this gig and tickets are still available at €45.50 a pop! Thursday night we have the fantastic Irish bluesy-folk artist Marc O’Reilly playing in The Sugar Club. Having played all over Europe, including gigs at Glastonbury and Electric Picnic as well as performing across the water in the States! A similar writing style and sound to Bon Iver and John Martyn he plays this show off the back of a small UK and Ireland tour.
Starting off the weekend we have a number of great shows for you, first off we have singer-songwriter Paddy Hanna playing in Whelan’s, and over in The Workman’s Club we have Elaine Mai. Both Irish born and both fantastic artists in their own right. When he’s not doing solo gigs Paddy Hanna plays in another group called Autre Monde who were recently tipped in Nialler9’s New Irish Music Category! Elaine Mai lends her hand to electronic music production as well as remixes and original material and has some really good stuff up on YouTube and at her website, be sure to check them both out!
Saturday night we see the return of Classic Rock giants Iron Maiden! (Seriously though, what are the chances of having Wheatus & Iron Maiden gigging in the same week, you can’t make this stuff up!) ‘The Book Of Souls’ Tour comes to the 3 Arena in Dublin. It’s the Rock legends first gig in Ireland for the last seven years and is gearing up to be one of the best yet. Support on the night is from American band Shinedown! This gig is unsurprisingly SOLD OUT!
So that’s it! Just one thing left for us to choose the GIG OF THE WEEK! This week was a tough choice but we are going to have to give it to Wheatus! The group bring an air of nostalgia to our little island, and I’ve never met anyone who doesn’t like or hasn’t at least heard “Teenage Dirtbag” and in fairness, if I had I wouldn’t trust them!
