Dublin Gig Guide : 21st – 27th August 2017
It’s that time of the week again! The Dublin Gig Guide brought to you by Sound Training! Lot’s going on this week covering all tastes, we’ve got Trad, Pop, Folk, Hardcore Punk and more! So let’s get in started! On Monday night at the National Stadium. With support on the night from JP Cooper who in his own right has gained a massive following over the last year or two and landing this support slot will only grow his popularity! The Script themselves have released a new album recently after teasing their fans with a number of sneak-peaks towards the end of last year. Their 5th album Freedom Child was announced on 21st July and is expected to be released on 1st September!
Tuesday, we have the Call The Dancers Trad Session which will be taking place at Whelan’s! The first ever Trad session to be held in Whelan’s, it brings the friendly atmosphere and with a name like Calle The Dancers there is only one thing they are looking to achieve, some dancing! Doors from 7PM and FREE entry! On Wednesday night we have American Folk artist Marc Cohn performing at Vicar Street. Cohn is most known for his hit song “Walking In Memphis” which was so popular it was covered by Cher and American Country-Rock band Lonestar! Doors from 7PM! Meanwhile, over in Whelan’s Grant-Lee Philips will be playing! Recently Philips up-and moved himself and his family from Los Angeles to Tennessee which could have possibly influenced his album from last year “The Narrows”, which was very well received from critics and fans alike! Support on the night is from Howe Gelb who is a very well respected Musician in his own right! Finally for Wednesday night, we have American Hardcore-Punk band Defeater playing at the Gypsy Rose Rock Bar! Playing Ireland for the first time, Defeater who hail from Massachusetts can be categorised as “melodic hardcore” as they take “creative liberties” when writing songs. Tickets only €20, so be sure to get down for some moshing!
The Academy plays host to The Psychedelic Furs on Thursday night. The Furs makes their return to Ireland for the first time in 5 years! The Singles Tour will revisit the highlights of the band’s impressive career, so you can expect to hear all the bands hits that spanned over their career! Tickets still available at €30!
Friday evening is another busy one for live music, with a trio of headline acts! We’ll start off with John Prine & Sturgil Simpson who will be playing at Vicar Street! A very unique double-header, two huge country music names, Prine is one of the pioneering songwriters of his generation and Simpson, a younger generation singer who offers his own unique take on country, soul, & rock and roll songwriting combine for this one of a kind show! Check out their appearance on Up Close & Personal with Grammy Pro! Also on Friday night, we have Northern Irish Punk-Rock band Stiff Little Fingers who will be playing the intimate setting of The Academy! Along with the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, The Jam, Buzzcocks and many more Stiff Little Fingers started writing songs about their life and experiences which really sat with the people of Northern Ireland as they wrote about real life experiences which everyone was experiencing! In 1979 they also became the first band to chart in the UK top 20 album chart with an independent label which they achieved with their debut album “Inflammable Material”. Tickets for this are SOLD OUT! And finally for Friday, we have a double header in The Wright Venue, with Green Velvet performing to celebrate 15 years of Circus! With KI Creighton & Yousef on the support slots it’s going to be a fantastic night of Techno! Green Velvet with his familiar green hair, has embarked on a European tour that has seen him play Ibiza, Italy, Malta, and the UK, known for creating great vibes on the dance floor, be sure to grab some of the limited tickets that remain!
Saturday is another dance music orientated night of gigs, with techno legend Robert Hood performing at District 8! A household name throughout the house and techno scene, founding member of Underground Resistance, and recognised as one of the pioneers of minimal techno! Doors from 11PM. Elsewhere we have Axel Boman performing a b2b set in Pygmalion with Space Dimension Controller! There’s no better place for a b2b than Pyg and with two of the best in the game at the moment is just the icing on the cake! Get down and dirty from 11PM!
We close out the weekend on Sunday night with former Voice of Ireland finalist Kim Hayden who will be performing an intimate gig in Whelan’s! Kim will be releasing her debut album and this gig the the album launch party! She will be supported by Liam Geddes & As Humans on the night!
