We’re back with another Dublin Gig Guide! Lots of great stuff going on this week, although we must start this off with a sad note. Chester Bennington of the nu-metal rock band Linkin Park was found dead at his home yesterday evening, our thoughts and prayers and with his family and friends. Chester was one of the leading vocalists of his time and was the voice of a generation for many. He will be sorely missed.
Let’s get on with this weeks gigs! Two great shows kicking us off on Tuesday night! First off we have Kate Nash performing at The Academy! Nash rose to fame with her sleeper hit “Foundations” which came from her debut album “Made Of Bricks”. She began recording while after a broken leg had left her housebound! She began gigging and soon secured a manger and producers for her music after posting it to MySpace. She was a seminal figure in the NME revolution of the mid to late noughties. With two more albums since then she still has a big following after starting up her own record label “Have 10p Records”. Few tickets still going for this one! Over in the Bord Gais Energy Theatre on Tuesday night we have the infamous Brian Wilson of the The Beach Boys! Wilson, along with his band will be performing all the hits from the 1966 Beach Boys album Pet Sounds, making the 50th anniversary of the album. Known as the Mozart of Rock, it’s always a celebration when he performs so what better way to spend your Tuesday evening! Tickets are SOLD OUT!
Wednesday night we have the Galway Street Club performing at Whelan’s! From their own biography the Galway Street Club started almost as a joke in March of 2016, when a group of buskers who would busk on the street, decided to play music together properly. A 14-piece culturally diverse group of musicians, they have been described as a ‘musical united nations’! Advanced tickets €8 or €10 on the door, get down for the Musical United Nations!
Thursday night we have the Leopardstown Racecourse Festivals in Association with Bulmers and they have the fantastic Irish Rock Band The Stunning! The Stunning formed in 1986, and after relentless touring they broke up in 1994 due to failed business ventures and failure at securing international success. However that would not stop them, as after a number of album re-issues they completed a 12-date Irish tour in 2008 with the final gig coming at Electric Picnic! In 2015 they spent two weeks at Grouse Lodge Recording Studio in CO. Westmeath recording new material which was performed over a number of festival appearances over the year. Tickets €18! Meanwhile way across town in The Sugar Club, we have New Orleans Swamp Donkeys! The New Orleans Swamp Donkeys advertise themselves as “the hottest band to do the earliest jazz in years.” With many different brass bands taking the scene by storm, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Booka Brass Band, Hot 8 Brass Band, it is tough to find a niche in the market that is littered with an abundance of talented musicians. One of the stand out things about the Swamp Donkeys is the lead singer Louis Armstrong-esq James Williams. With gigs at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Fest, Monte Carlo Sporting Summer Fest and a whole host of others, this is certainly not one to miss if Jazz tickles your fancy!
We are kicking off the weekend here with a bang! ZZ Top! That’s right, ZZ Top will be playing on Friday night at the 3 Arena! The classic rock band will return to Irish shores once again for a single show of a world tour which includes gigs with Guns ‘n’ Roses! Be sure to grab a ticket while you can because although there is a few tickets left, this is sure to be a SELL OUT! Elsewhere on Friday night, we have Jiggy hosting their album launch! Jiggy, as the name suggests are steeped in Traditional Irish Music but also incorporate many other elements including beatbox, hip-hop dance grooves and world music rhythms to name a few! Their new album “Translate” will be available to buy on the night!
Saturday night in The Button Factory, we have Favourite Worst Nightmare who are the #1 Arctic Monkeys Tribute Act in the country! Be sure to make your way down there and feel like you’re at the real thing! Over in District 8, which has had a huge amount of big names playing there recently we have Kerri Chandler! The House Music specialist has been at the forefront of house music since the his early years and has become a household name across the globe, and he also founded Madhouse and MadTech Records which has signed some big names! Finally for Saturday night we have a festival taking place in Punchestown! With some big names performing over the two days (Saturday & Sunday) including Culture Club, Shane, Filan, All Saints, Smokie, Bonnie Tyler, Tom Jones and many more it’s going to be something special! The festival returns to Punchestown after last years success and they also offer pink boutique camping!
Finally, on Sunday as part of the Circles gigs that brought Kerri Chandler on Saturday night, Techno legend Ben Klock will be performing a 4-hour set from 2pm in the day! That is a rollover if ever we’ve seen one! He will be accompanied on the day with The Black Madonna who in her own right is a well established artist! Both play Sunday at District 8!
So that’s it for this week folks! Hopefully you can make some plans for the upcoming week with the help of our guide. Just one last thing to cover, and that is the GIG OF THE WEEK! And with so much good stuff on this week covering all genres it was difficult one to choose. However we have decided that it has to be ZZ TOP at 3 Arena! ZZ Top have been around since the birth of the Earth and the last time they played Ireland they didn’t play Dublin so that’s why we have chosen ZZ Top as this weeks gig of the week! See you again next time!
