It’s time for another Weekly instalment of Dublin’s Gig Guide brought to you by Sound Training! Quiet enough start to this week but then as always as the weekend rolls in there is more gigs on than you can shake a stick at! Let’s kick off as always with Monday! Quiet around town on Monday night, although if you’re looking for a good old fashioned Irish Trad Session there is only one place to be and that’s Mother Reilly’s in Rathmines. This open session has been running for a number of years and is always a great night, whether Trad is your thing or not it’s one of the things you must check out in the city! Usually kicks off around 9 / 9.30pm all welcome!
Tuesday evening, Whelan’s plays host to Mike Brookfield! The blues guitarist who is known for his ability to craft hook-laden big blues ballads, and has exceptional guitar skills! He plays Whelan’s from 8pm. Wednesday night is a big one, as LCD Soundsystem perform as part of a 3 night SOLD OUT stretch at the Olympia Theatre! With their latest album American Dream which was only released this month, they announced a tour and sold out a number of gigs! All three Olympia shows sold out pretty much instantly so if you happen to have snagged a ticket make sure to get their early as it’s going to be jammed! For those of us who didn’t get LCD tickets, the Australian Pink Floyd are performing at the 3 Arena. Now this cover band are the next best thing to the actual Floyd, and as we all know that will never happen, so if you always wanted to see Pink Floyd in the flesh this is your chance! Speaking from experience, these guys sure know how to put on a show! Complete with lasers and flying theatrics! Be sure to get down and check them out! If classic psychedelic rock is not your cup of tea then get down to Temple Bar, where the Button Factory is playing host to Loyle Carner. Loyle is Britain’s newest hip-hop artist who has been making waves across the UK. Having been compared by some to an early Kanye West, he creates a sound all his own with East-coast hop-hop, jazz and soulful laid back pop.
Thursday night the No Encore Podcast guys are putting a gig together that includes some of the best Irish talent around. Post-Rockers Overhead, The Albatross will be performing alongside Daíthi and Elaine Mai! All three have been featured on our Dublin Gig Guide previously but not all at once! This is certainly not one to miss! Whelan’s plays host to this one and doors are from 8PM!
Starting us off for the weekend we have Irish band Otherkin performing at Tower Records as they launch OK, their debut album! The Garage rock four-piece based are one of Dublin’s hottest bands right now and for all the right reasons. Otherkin are know for their catchy choruses, big riffs and thumping drums that are reminiscent of brilliant bands like The Clash, Blur and The Strokes. Head down to Tower Records and grab a copy of the album and see them live! Finally, closing out the weekend on Saturday night we have the Rubberbandits playing at Vicar Street. Know for their outlandish shopping bags on their heads as well as their comedy skits, they have released a full length album titled “Serious About Men” which features 24 tracks! Quite unlike most artists you get currently! If you’re looking to not taking yourself too seriously, and have a good laugh then be sure to check them out! Over in The Academy, we have English electronic duo Lamb! Playing a mixture of Trip-Hop inspired D&B combined with many other influences. Lamb have been making music since 1996 and after a short hiatus during the five years they were apart they both experimented with different musical projects, including solo albums that fared quite well in the charts however in 2009 they decided to get back to Lamb and began work of their 5th album, also named 5! With another two albums under their belt since 2009 they are showing no signs of stopping! Be sure to check them out at The Academy, with tickets from €29.90 a piece!
