Dublin Gig Guide : 29th May – 4th June 2017
This week Manchester and the world was devastated when 22 people lost their lives and 59 people suffered injuries when a suicide bomber detonated a bomb in the lobby of the Manchester Arena. Words cannot describe the pain these families and friends have suffered. Our prayers and best wishes go out to each of the families, friends and loved ones that have been affected by this terrorist crime. #RIP
So let’s kick off this weeks gigs! We’ll start as always on Monday night, with George Ezra playing a sold out show the Olympia Theatre. Ezra hit the big time with his smash hit single ‘Budapest’ which propelled him into the spotlight. An accompanying video for the single has amassed over 100 million views on YouTube! He has hinted that he has a second album on the way so expect him to debut some new songs! Monday night also plays host to Imelda May in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre, May released her fifth studio album in April and is performing three shows at the Bord Gáis and one in the UK before jetting off for an North American & Canada tour! Life Love Flesh Blood reached number 2 in the Irish charts missing out on first only to Ed Sherran’s “Divide”. Doors at 8PM for this one!
Tuesday night we have Irish pop band Picture This performing at the Olympia for five nights and have sold out them all! Playing as part of a UK and Ireland tour, the duo had a debut EP hit number 1 and have signed a record deal with Republic Records, who have The Weeknd, Drake, Nicki Minaj to name a few! Doors 7PM! Shaun Mendes plays the 3 Arena also on Tuesday, the pop-sensation will be performing in promotion of his new album which is due out in September 2017! A massive 44-date tour including shows in the UK, North America and Europe, and with more dates due to be announced soon! We will also have the Moscow Philharmonic orchestra performing in the national concert hall on Tuesday evening which will be a fantastic night!
Wednesday night, we have a double-headed of American rock bands playing together in Whelan’s. Joan Of Arc will provide support on the night to Minus the Bear who have sold over 500’000 albums worldwide over their career! Be sure to head down to Whelan’s for a great night of American Indie-Rock! Elsewhere, JP Cooper will be playing The Academy also on Wednesday night. Known for his hit song “September Song” and his newest single “Passport Home”. Tickets for this are SOLD OUT!
Thursday night we have Irish singer-songwriter Rosa Nutty launching her new EP in The Workman’s Club. After performances at Castlepalooza, Knockanstockan well as radio play on RTÉ and the Other Voices the future looks very bright! Over in the Ratoath Venue Theatre we have Christy Dignam & Joe Jewell from Aslan. They will be playing an intimate and special acoustic gig that’s not to be missed!
Kicking us off with the weekend we have Kraftwerk! The German electronica act will be bringing their fantastic 3-D show to the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre. The German electronic pioneers will be playing a two shows over the course of their time in Ireland and both shows sold out in no time at all! We will also have Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith playing The Academy on Middle Abbey St.
The festival season is well and truly upon us, last week we had Life Festival and this week we have Vantastival, with performances from bands such as Overhead, The Albatross, The Riptide Movement and Kilá amongst others! Vantastival takes place the 3rd & 4th of June. Also we have Forbidden Fruit which takes place in Dublin over the weekend with some fantastic performers lined up it is sure to be a fantastic weekend! Let’s just hope the weather stays the way it has been this past week! On Saturday for those who can’t make it to either festivals, we have electro-house cult hero Boyz Noize who will be playing at District 8 from 11PM!
So that’s it! This week’s GIG OF THE WEEK has to go to KRAFTWERK at the Bord Gáis. The German heroes have been a massive influence on so many acts across the world and both nights are going to be fantastic, musically and visually!
