Dublin Gig Guide : 31st July – 6th August 2017

It’s Friday! Which means we are back with our weekly Dublin Gig Guide! All the information you’ll need to plan this weeks nights out! With the bank holiday this week, there is so much stuff on over the course of the weekend that we will try to cover it all, we’ve got three different festivals and although they’re not as big as the major festivals throughout the country like Electric Picnic Sea Sessions etc. they are fantastic cultural events and with the weather being the way it has been this past month, hopefully the rain will stay away too!

So much to get through this week so let’s get cracking! Kicking us off on Monday night we have the Monday Jazz Jam which takes place every Monday evening in the Grand Social. This is where like minded jazz folk get together and have a jam, just bring your instruments! Open to everyone who enjoys jazz and can improvise over a tune, doors from 8.30 and it’s free entry! Tuesday night, we have the classical musical Grease which will be playing at the Bord Gais Energy Theatre. A musical which needs no introduction, Grease follows the lives of Danny Zuko and and Sandy Dumbrowski and their teenage years in high-school! Doors at 7PM! Elsewhere, in Arthur’s Blues’n’Jazz Club we have the Modern Irish Quartet. Featuring master vibes player from Philadelphia, Tony Miceli and three of Ireland’s finest with Michael Buckley on sax, Dave Redmond providing bass duties, and John Daly on the drums. Playing an eclectic mix of music featuring compositions from Peter Frampton, Oscar Petitford and original musical from the lads also.

Wednesday night we have Frankie Cosmos! Greta Klien better known as Frankie Cosmos began her career recording demos and uploading them to Bandcamp and from there her career took off! Head down to Whelan’s for some chilled out indie rock with soft vocals! Over in CrowBar on Wednesday night, we have the second Takeover gig from the Modem Collective! The Modem folk have really been creating a stir in the electronic music scene in Dublin over the past few months. After their launch gig in the Button Factory last April, they have been hard at work in the studio writing and recording new material so expect a great night of live electronic music!

Thursday night we have the old familiar face of Mick Pyro & The Shogunz Of Stank performing at The Bowery, Rathmines. Pyro, always seems to have a number of bands on the go at the same time, it’s a wonder where he gets the time for it all! Having played The Bowery before with The Shogunz Of Stank, Pyro and co. will be performing their usual blend of funk, soul, hip-hop & durrttty grooves! 9PM ’till late!

We’ll kick Friday off with what’s happening in the Wright Venue, Steve Aoki one of the worlds top DJ’s of the past few years will be playing! After selling out his last show at The Wright Venue, Aoki returns with his in your face style of electro music that has been the main feature of his live performances. If you’re still looking to go to this, be quick as there is only limited tickets remaining! Elsewhere, we have the 2017 Indiependance festival takin gplace in Mitchelstown. With a fantastic line-up across the weekend including Manic Street Preachers, The Coronas, Tom Odell, All Tvvins, Overhead, The Albatross, Fangclub and many, many more! It is sure to be a serious weekend of music! If your looking for a last minute ticket you’ll be sad as it is completely sold out, although we think there might be some day tickets still available!

Elsewhere, we have Castlepalooza kicking off in Tullamore! Another great music festival, Castlepalooza has been running for a number of years now and is growing every time! Previous years line up include international act Caribou, Toby Carr, Alex Metric and many more big names and this year is no different. Bands like Bitch Falcon, Hot Cops, Shit Robot and more playing this year its going to be one not to miss! Such a great festival and similar to Indiependance due to the size, everything is so easy to find which just adds to the good times you are guaranteed to have!

Saturday both Casltepalooza and Indiependance continue through the weekend we have another festival kicking off this time in Dún Laoghaire called Beatyard! With some massive names performing over the two day festival including, Mark Ronson, AIR, Morcheeba and a host of other up and coming bands, if you’re not already at Castlepalooza or Indiependance make sure to get down to this! There will also be the Bernard Shaw Food Market Eatyard open across the weekend where you can gorge on all sorts of delicious gourmet food and treats! AND if that isn’t enough, you can bring the kids along too as there will be loads of activities for them to do in a lace the organisers have called the Kidsyard!

So with this week it’s all go with festival season! We couldn’t pick a gig from them as it just wouldn’t be fair, so this weeks GIG OF THE WEEK has to be the MODEM TAKEOVER in CrowBar! Modem are the next big electronic music collective coming out of Dublin, and with pop-up gigs in All City & Dublin Ink and a Takeover headline show at Button Factory, this CrowBar show will be another step in the right direction.
