Dublin Gig Guide : 5th – 11th June 2017
We’re back with this weeks Dublin Gig Guide! As the festival season is well and truly upon us, with Life festival last weekend in Mullingar and Vantastival and Forbidden Fruit this weekend. We’ve still got Body & Soul, Castlepalooza, Indiependance, Electric Picnic and more over the coming months! A lot to get through! But for now, we’ll stick to whats coming up this week.
Kicking us off on Bank Holiday Monday is the final day of Forbidden Fruit! Taking place at the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham. After Aphex Twin, Moderat, Orbital and many more rocked the place over the past two days, the line-up for Monday is a bit more chilled out. with Bon Iver headlining it should be a great day. Also playing are Flying Lotus, Lisa Hannigan, Rusangano Family and more. Still a few tickets left!
Tuesday night, we have Ozzie rock band Airboune playing in The Academy! After releasing their most recent album in September of last year, Airboune make their return to Ireland for a show with support from Devilskin! Tickets are still available at €25! Over in the Olympia Theatre we have Agnes Obel performing as part of her European tour, her latest single “It’s Happening Again” has been very well received. “Citizen of Glass” is her most successful album yet after doubling it’s first week of sales in comparison to her previous effort “Aventine”.
Wednesday night we have the Olympia again playing host to another great act, Simple Minds! Simple Minds released an Acoustic album recently and have decided to take the album on tour. Performing all their hits from over the years acoustically for the first time ever! The demand was so high for this gig that they have to add a second date! Support on the night is from KT Tunstall so it’s going to be a great night of music! Over at the National Concert Hall we have Saint Sister! Described by themselves as “Atmosfolk”. Make of that what you will but Saint Sister have got quite a track-record for their short career, with support slots for Arcade Fire’s Will Butler as well as radio play on Irish radio, BBC Radio 1 and German National Radio 1Live. They have also had a song nominated for the Choice music prize! Catch them at the NCH from 8PM!
Thursday we have Michael Bolton performing at the 3 Arena, Bolton began his career playing in hard-rock bands and fronting the band Blackjack, he actually auditioned for the lead singer position in Black Sabbath but didn’t make the cut! During the 1980’s he began recording a series of pop ballads which seemed to suit him more and he gained massive success off the back of these recordings, selling more than 75 million records worldwide! Across town in Whelan’s, we have Japanese singer-songwriter MITSKI. MITSKI sold out a headline show at the Workman’s Club last year so has returned to perform again, but this time in Whelan’s promoting her latest album “Puberty 2″ which was released in June of 2016 which the Sunday Times described as “Unflinching confessional pop”. Catch her at Whelan’s from 8PM!
Quiet enough weekend this week, but the few shows we have are humdingers! First off on Friday night we have Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder playing at the 3 Arena with support from Glen Hansard. Along with Nirvana, Alice In Chains and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and in particular Eddie Vedder were arguably the most popular band to come out of the Seattle grunge era and with the untimely deaths of Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain & Lanye Stanley are the only one from that time still going. He has done the soundtrack to the movie “Into The Wild” and in 2011 he released an album called Ukulele Songs. This gig is SOLD OUT!
Finally for the weekend on Saturday night we have Liam Gallagher playing at the Olympia Theatre. The iconic, and troublesome Oasis frontman will be playing in promotion of his new solo album, which is yet to be announced although his new single “Wall Of Glass” has all the attributes of classic Gallagher. Tickets for this one are SOLD OUT! While over in The Academy we have French heavy-metal band Gorija performing a sold out show! It’s going to get dark and really-really heavy at this one!
So that’s it for this week! Only one thing left and that’s the GIG OF THE WEEK! Again, this week was a tough decision but it has to be Eddie Vedder at the 3 Arena! With support from The Frames frontman and fantastic musician, Glen Hansard! It is not going to be one you want to miss!
