Dublin Gig Guide 26th June -2nd July 2017
It’s that time again folks! All the information that you need to plan your week’s gigs around the city! Not too much mainstream stuff on this week but it’s usually the smaller less popular gigs that are more entertaining! So let’s get into it!
Monday night kicking us off we have Jazz group BadBadNotGood playing in the familiar surroundings of the Sugar Club. Because of it’s layout, The Sugar Club is the perfect venue for a Jazz group because of the cinema-style seating arrangement and it still has room a the front for those of us who like a boogie! Doors for this one from 8PM. While down the road from The Sugar Club at the National Concert Hall we have Sergei Nakariakov playing as part of Dublin Brass Week! Sergei is a Russian trumpet virtuoso and made a made for himself in the early 90’s with memorable performances of Ravel and Gershwin’s work. He is accompanied by Maria Meerovitch on piano while he takes control of the Trumpet & Fluglehorn!
Tuesday evening Vicar Street plays host to American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ani DiFranco. At the tender age of 18 DiFranco set up her own record company Righteous Babe Records and with 19 albums under her belt most recent being her 2017 release “Binary”. Expect a mixed bag of Pop, Funk, Soul, Hip-Hop and much more on the night! Some tickets still left for this one!
Wednesday night we have Irish Dj & Producer Quinton Campbell performing all night at Pygmalion. Pyg as it’s known to the regular visitors has had a wealth of local, national and international names performing there since they opened. Quinton Campbell has some great gigs under his belt including a support slot with Roman Flugel earlier on this year. If it’s an all night party with some lovely Techno beats then this is the party for you! Elsewhere on Wednesday night we have Sad13, the solo moniker of Sadie Dupuis lead singer of Pop-Grunge band Speedy Ortiz. Sad13 is a change or approach for Dupuis as she wrote, produced and recorded the entire album herself “to exercise my control-freaky demons”. Tickets are priced at a reasonable €15.
Thursday we have a big one, Green Day will play the Royal Hospital in Kilmainham! Bille Joe, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool are probably the worlds biggest pop-punk band and have sold over 85 million albums world-wide. With support from everybody’s favourite punk band, Rancid! With Revolution Radio being released in October of last year, Billie Joe and Co. don’t seem to be stopping anytime soon. Tickets are still available at €58.65! We also have a special gig over in The Workman’s Club, the Positive Touch Album Launch is taking place, Touch Ireland is a charity that helps vulnerable children in Zambia, Sri Lanka, Cameroon, India, Nepal, Brazil and Bangladesh, a fantastic charity and with the help of Paddy Casey, Gavin Glass, Mundy to name a few they have produced this album which all proceeds will go to Touch! Great music on the night too and for a great cause! Finally for Thursday night, we have Australian born singer-songwriter Tash Sultana. Real name Natasha Sultana her music career began when she started busking on the streets of Melbourne and ended up going viral online as a result. Now she is touring all over the world performing sold out shows across Europe, Australia, Canada and the US. Known for her energetic performances and incredible looping of guitars, beatboxing and vocals all makes for a great live gig! Tickets are SOLD OUT!
Once the musical is returning to the Olympia Theatre this Summer after a hugely successful tours in Seoul, United States, Toronto and Australia. It follow the musical based 2007 film of the same name, which featured Glen Hansard of The Frames and Markéta Irglová of The Swell Season. A fantastic show and great music we just had to include it in our Gig Guide! It is scheduled to run for until the 26th August so there will be plenty of time to secure some tickets! Over in The Hangar, we have Dutch DJ & Producer Keith Carnal, who will be banging out some Techno until the early hours. Known for his raw stripped down techno he knows how to keep the dancefloor moving! Doors from 10.30PM.
Saturday we have another big name performing at the 3 Arena as Kings Of Leon make their return as part of a two-night stint in the countries capital. Saturday night is SOLD OUT but you can still get tickets for the second night on Sunday! they released their last album Walls in October of last year and this tour includes shows in Germany, Dublin, Denmark, Spain, the UK, North America, Canada and Mexico! Meanwhile over at The Royal Hospital Kilmainham, we have The Coronas! With their new album “Trust The Wire” only being released earlier this month the four-piece have announced that they will be embarking on a tour which includes shows in Germany, Boston and Toronto! At their Kilmainham show they are being supported by up-and-coming Irish act BARQ who recently performed at our Degrees of Light Album Launch in aid of Aware! Tickets for this are €39.00 and there are still a few available!
Finally ending out the week for us is Macy Gray! The singer who made a name for herself with “I Try” will be performing at the National Concert Hall at 8PM. Known for her soulful vocal and r&b flavours it’s sure to be a fantastic night!
So that’s it! Just one last thing to cover this week and that is of course our GIG OF THE WEEK! This week, as always was a tough one but it’s going to have to be GREEN DAY at Royal Kilmainham Hospital! The undisputed kings of Pop-Punk make their return to Ireland and for fans young and old its going to be a special performance at the perfect venue!
