With a number of big acts recently announced including Paramore, Adam Lambert & Queen, The Hot Sprockets & Imelda May, there’s no better time for this week’s Dublin Gig Guide! Kicking us off on Tuesday evening there’s a very special gig for the people who are looking for some nostalgic Irish punk band Therapy? make their return for an acoustic set!! They will be performing at one of Dublin’s most famous venues, Whelan’s. The band have been together since 1989 and have gone through a small number of line-up changes over the years but are still going strong, and with fourteen albums under their belts there is surely more to come from the lads hailing from Belfast! Be sure to grab a ticket which are still available at €25 from usual outlets! Also on Tuesday night we have American Saxophonist Colin Stetson performing in The Workman’s Club. A regular collaborator with Arcade Fire and Bon Iver, Stetson has an upcoming album out on the 28th of this month and has a number of other projects in the pipeline.
Wednesday night we have classic prog rock band Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett performing in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Genesis album Wind & Wurthering. So you can expect all the famous classics from genesis as well as some new material! Over in The Academy we have 4-piece English rockers The Big Moon performing in promotion of their newest album which was released on the 7th of this month. The all girl group have begun to make a name for themselves with support slots for VANT, InHeaven and The Maccabees. On Thursday night we have alternative country duo The Handsome Family playing at Vicar Street, doors at 8pm. Over in The Workman’s Club we have Irish Alternative Rock band Youth Mass launching their new EP Lost Futures. After being compared to an early Radiohead in one review, be sure catch the gig with tickets at €10!
Let’s kick off Friday night with Ben Portsmouth (Elvis) performing at the Olympia Theatre. “Taking Care of Elvis” is one of the best Elvis impersonator shows there is and this is not one to miss, it’s just like the real thing! Out in Bray there is the Bray Jazz Festival taking place over the weekend with a whole host of great Irish & International Jazz acts performing throughout the 3-day festival. There is free and paid shows over the course of the weekend so buzz down to get some cool jazz! Rising Irish band Fiction Peaks are also playing on Friday night in promotion of their new album Citizen.
On Saturday night there is only really one gig to mention apart from the Bray Jazz Festival and Elvis (see above!) and that is Bruno Mars at the 3 Arena. The pop-sensation brings his 24 K Magic world tour to Dublin for a two-night stint. Expect the unexpected! Bruno and his band always give 110% into each performance so it will be a entertaining evening! Bruno plays again on Sunday night, but also on Sunday we have Galway based Singer-Songwriter Niamh Regan playing in the upstairs venue of Whelan’s. Launching her new EP on the night as well. Fans of Detroit Techno and house will fancy seeing Moodymann at District 8, and former vocalist and guitarist of Supertramp Roger Hodgson plays Vicar Street with doors from 8PM.
Finally our GIG OF THE WEEK this week we can’t look past the Bray Jazz Festival. Every year this gains more and more traction and it is a fantastic source or local and international jazz musicians. The location of the beautiful seaside town of Bray only adds to the quality. It brings great culture and diversity to the suburbs of Dublin.
