Dublin Gig Guide : 27th March – 2nd April
We are back here at Sound Training Online to bring you all the hottest gigs from around the capital! Another great week this week of eclectic gigs to suit all tastes! After a jam packed week last week with shows from All Time Low, Jack Savoretti, some of the Dave Matthews Band and more this week will be no different so lets get into it!
Kicking us off on Monday night we have Car Seat Headrest, an American Indie Rock group who are making waves with their laid-back style of alternative Indie rock. This gig was scheduled to be in Whelan’s but due to demand it has been moved to The Academy! This should give you an indication of how popular the band are, so much so that this gig is SOLD OUT! Over in Vicar Street on Monday night, we have Thundercat. Stephen Bruner, better know as Thundercat is known for working with artists such as Suicidal Tendencies, Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus among many others. He plays his 6-string bass like I’ve never heard anyone play it before and only being accompanied by keys and drums, the sound he creates is incredible! Tickets for this one are only €27.90 so be sure to check him out and you can come stand next to me at the gig!
Tuesday night in Whelan’s we have Swedish musician Jens Lekman, who interestingly is a retired bingo-hall employee! Lekman combines all the elements that are needed for a very talented pop artist. Heavily influenced by Belle & Sebastian and Jonathan Richman, he has just released his latest release “Life Will See You Now” in February, and lead single “What’s That Perfume That You Wear” has been doing quite well in the charts. Tickets for this one are €25.
Wednesday night get the Adidas tracksuits out because UK Grime sensation Stormzy brings his live show to the Olympia Theatre! Stormzy (Michael Omari) was the first Grime artist to have an album reach Number 1 in the UK album charts for his 2017 release “Gang Signs & Prayers”. This show is part of a European tour along with a show at Cochella in the US! Stormzy has a popular YouTube channel where he uploads himself freestyling and one of his more popular ones is a track titled “Shut Up”. All tickets for this one are SOLD OUT!
Thursday night, we have American hip-hop group Run The Jewels who were recently announced for this years Electric Picnic line-up performing at the Olympia Theatre. Run The Jewels also known as RTJ, are EI-P and Killer Mike who have worked with a number of big names over the past two decades including OutKast, Aesop Rock, Cage and many more. some people have said that RTJ could be the new OutKast, now I wouldn’t go that far but they’re definietly one to watch for the future. Over in The Academy we have a completely different type of gig, Colin Hay who was once the lead singer of 1980’s band Men At Work since the band dismembered in 1986 and subsuquent reunions since. Hay’s music has been used on a number of occasions by actor/director, Zach Braff of TV show Scrubs fame. This consistent use of his work gave his career a re-vamp in the mid 2000’s. His most recent effort was released at the beginning of this month so be sure to hear plenty of his new work as well as some of the old classics!
Friday night is a busy one for anyone who is planning on going to Whelan’s as there is three gigs worthy of mentioning over the course of the night! Downstairs in the Main venue we have Irish band The Blades, who after reforming in 2013 have played a number of gigs throughout the last few years in the Olympia Theatre and this time around it’s Whelan’s time! Then once they finish up we have Irish electronic-pop duo Le Boom spinning tunes until the early hours! Then upstairs in Whelan’s we have Dublin based, indie rock 5-piece Penrose performing and doors for this one are from 8Pm and it’s only €7 in! Be sure to get down and support Irish music old and new!
Over in the Olympia theatre we have Irish folk/rockers Keywest playing. The lads are known for being one of the hardest working bands in Ireland, you can see them occasionally busking on Grafton St. to massive crowds! they released their last album “Joyland” in September of 2015 and in the same month appeared on the cover of HotPress. Grab your ticekts while you can for €22.50 now! And finally for Friday night, we have English house act Duksy playing in the Button Factory. Gaining mainstream success a number of years ago Dusky made waves when their track “Careless” reached the Number 1 spot of the Beatport charts for over 3 weeks and another track “Nobody Else” had made it into the Beatport Top 10 that was released prior to “Careless”. I’ve seen these lads live before and they put on a great live show and really keep the vibe alive all night!
Finishing out the weekend on Saturday night we have Mano Le Tough, another act named for the Electric Picnic line-up this week. Irishman Mano will be banging out his usual chilled out house vibes throughout District 8, while over in the 3Arena country pop sensation Nathan Carter will be performing! Tickets are still availble for this one at €39.05 and it’s sure to be a great night of classic country rock!
